The rifle team of the Galway Fish and Game Club is a competitive shooting rifle team that shoots in the Tri-County Rifle League located here in Northeastern New York State.  The team consists of men, women and junior team shooters that have a keen interest in competitive rifle shooting.  The shooting competition consists of shooting indoors on 50-foot ranges with .22 caliber target grade rifles.  The majority of the shooters in the shooting league use Anschutz brand target rifles.  Other necessary equipment is a target shooting coat, target glove and target sling.  There are also many varieties of optional equipment that may be used depending on personal preference and NRA and league regulations.  Rifle sights used may be either telescopic sights or iron sights.

The rifle matches are fired on Thursday nights starting at 8 p.m. during the league shooting season (January through April).  The matches consist of shooting four positions (prone, sitting, kneeling and offhand (standing).  Five shots are fired per position at NRA-A-17 targets – a perfect score being 200 points.  The top five individuals’ total scores from each team are used to determine wins or losses of each match.  The league consists of seven teams that compete twice (one time at each team’s range) per season (a total of 14 matches).  Practice begins each year in November on Thursday nights to prepare for the upcoming season.  There is an annual banquet after the season is over.  Individual and team awards and trophies are handed out at this event.  The 2008 team won 1st place and the 2009 team finished in 2nd place.

If anyone is interested in this type of competitive shooting, please call Raymond Everleth at 518-583-7353 or Ted Harrington at 518-885-4914 or cell phone 518-428-0609 or attend a Fish and Game club meeting to express your desire to shoot on the Galway Rifle Team.
