The Fish and Game Club sponsors a junior rifle club for kids ages 12 through high school. The club meets every Wednesday night from 6:30 till about 9PM. The club is run by certified rifle instructors and teaches basic marksmanship to the kids. All the shooting equipment (except ammo) is supplied free of charge – rifles, jackets, scopes, targets, etc. There is an annual fee of $25 to cover operating expenses and prizes. Ammo is sold at our cost (typically about $1 a week), or you are welcome to bring your own. Kids have to take and pass a two night safety class before actually starting shooting. Prizes are awarded as they progress up through the more advanced skill levels.
The kids learn fast – they get some good firearms safety training and learn how to shoot from the four basic positions. At the end of the season, we have a match against the parents – the kids have never lost! Within the junior club, there is a smaller group of kids who shoot competitively. These kids shoot a lot more and travel to tournaments on the weekends. Generally, every kid is given an opportunity to join this group if they wish at one time or another. It’s a great sport, and one of the few where girls compete directly against boys (actually, the girls generally do a little better).
The competition group does very well, consistently winning or placing at tournaments around the New England area (Gold medal at this year’s Empire State Games), and we have had several kids win college scholarships for their shooting ability.
